For some of you, this book will be all you will ever feel the need to read but, hard though it is to believe, there is even more knowledge out there than we’ve been able to cram in! So if you want to find out more about a topic here are some of the books that we think you will find useful.
Celtic Coins Ancient British Coins published by Chris Rudd (www.celticcoins.com). At £75 ABC is pricey but it is the comprehensive guide to the subject; if you can’t afford it personally, get your club to buy it! Roman Coins Coinage of Roman Britain by Richard Reece, published by Tempus 2002 (ISBN 0-7524-2523- 4). Anglo-Saxon Coins English Hammered Coinage, published by Shire Publications 2008 (ISBN 978-0-7478-0680-6). Interesting, and well-illustrated volume but it stops at Alfred. General Coins Coins of England, published by Spink 2012 (standard catalogue, updated annually, and frankly, a “must have”). General Coins England’s Striking History ed. by C. H. Perkins, published by Rotographic 2006 (ISBN 0-948964-85-5). A very readable book on hammered coins - excellent sketches.
Buckles Buckles by Ross Whitehead, published by Greenlight 2003 (ISBN 1-897738-17-X). Lots of examples shown - puts your buckles into context! Buttons Metal Buttons, published by Portcullis 2005 (ISBN 0-9532450- 4-7). The definitive book, but sadly leaves out the 18th and 19th centuries. Coin Weights Lion Ships and Angels by P. & B.R. Withers, 2nd edition published by Galata 2011 (ISBN 978- 1-908715-00-5). Not cheap, but it is the definitive work and used by FLOs! Roman Artefacts Roman Dress Accessories by Ellen Swift, published by Shire Publications 2003 (ISBN 0-7478- 0567-9). Good on brooches, but covers other things too.
Tokens Tokens & Tallies by Edward Fletcher, published by Greenlight 2003 (ISBN 1-897738-161). A useful overview - lots of photos. Pottery Pottery in Britain, 4000 BC to AD 1900 by Lloyd Laing, published by Greenlight 2003 (ISBN 1-897738-145). Useful introduction to styles. General Artefacts Archaeological Finds by Norena Shopland, published by Tempus 2005 (ISBN 0-7524-3132-3). Does some things, like Roman brooches, very well but patchy. Benet’s Artefacts 4th edition, published by Paul Murawski 2003 (ISBN 0-9536172-1-1). Another “must have” and a lavishly illustrated guide, with values. The Handbook of British Archaeology by Roy & Lesley Adkins & Victoria Leitch, published by Constable 2008 (ISBN 978-1-84529-606-3-9). Very useful for understanding finds in context.
A Decade of Discovery published by Archaeopress 2010 (ISBN 978-1-4073-0723-7). A collection of academic papers presented at a PAS conference in 2007 to mark its first decade and to show the use made of the database.
Conservation Advice Notes published by the PAS 2005 (ISBN 1-874454-34-5). Free! Conservation for Metal Detectorists by Richard Hobbs, Celia Honeycombe and Sarah Watkins, published by Tempus 2002 (ISBN 0-7524-2522-6). Comprehensive and a good read, if you like this sort of thing.
Advanced Detecting by Norfolk Wolf, published by Greenlight 2005 (ISBN 1-897738-250). One to read after a few years’ detecting - not before!
Life and Letters on the Roman Frontier by A.K. Bowman, published by BM press (ISBN-10 0415920256). Read what the Romans wrote. A great read. The Frome Hoard by Sam Moorhead, Anna Booth and Roger Bland, published by the BM Press 2010 (ISBN 978-0-7141-2334-9). A great little book. The Staffordshire Hoard by Kevin Leahy and Roger Bland, published by the BM Press 2009 (ISBN 978-0-7141-2328-8). The Vale of York Hoard by Gareth Williams and Barry Ager, published by the BM Press 2010 (ISBN 978-0-7141-1818-5). Roman Britain by Richard Hobbs & Ralph Jackson, published by the BM Press 2010 (ISBN 978-0-7141-5061-1). Excellent illustrations of Roman items.
